Relationships & Sex Education

At St Joseph’s we teach RSE through the scheme ‘Life to the Full’. This is modelled on the Catholic Education Service proposed structure for delivering a Catholic RSE Curriculum. Underpinning this scheme is the belief in the unique dignity of each person made in the image and likeness of God. Our approach to RSE therefore is rooted in the Catholic Church’s teaching of the human person and presented in a positive framework of Christian ideals.

â€˜Life to the Full’ is taught following three themes:

• Created and Loved by God

• Created to Love Others

• Created to Live in Community.

â€˜Life to the Full’ is a fully resourced scheme of work in Relationships Education for Catholic Primary schools which embraces and fulfils the new statutory curriculum. Taught with a spiral approach to learning, in which pupils revisit the same topics at an age-appropriate stage through their school life, the programme includes teaching about personal health, physical and emotional wellbeing, strong emotions, private parts of the body, personal relationships, family structures, trusted adults, growing bodies, puberty, periods, life cycles, the dangers of social media, an understanding of the Common Good and living in the wider world. The programme is fully inclusive of all pupils and their families. ‘Life to the Full’ has been written as a progressive scheme of work that supports the Religious Education, PSHE and Science already taught in school. As children progress through the school, they discover more about themselves and the wider world. It supports children in growing and developing healthily and holistically towards an understanding of their gender and its implications for successful relationships. We send home half-termly newsletters so that parents can support their children in discussion about the content in advance of lessons. We encourage parents to access the Parent Portal on the ten:ten website, to see overviews of the lessons, and so that they can prepare for the content.
